In 1948 games have been firstly organised in London for injured soldiers out of the last war -
the Stoke Mandeville Wheelchair Games. Twelve years later the first official games for athletes
with a disability takes place in Rome: the Paralympics. Since then they are performed every four
years in another city, since 1992 always in the host country of the Olympic Games, and they
undergo just in last years an perpetual rising interest and prestige and therefor an
equalisation of their achievements with the athletes of the Olympic Games.
Almost 4,000 athletes from 135 nations have participated in the last Paralympic Games in Athens
that have taken place close three weeks after the Olympic Games. Even if the attention
to the "games besides the games" shows in the last decade a pleasant trend, so they
do not unfortunately spark that common interests at all, as it is expected for
the second largest sport event worldwide after the Olympic Games. Although the athletes
perform the same or partially even better achievements than their colleagues at the Olympics.
This web presentation should give you an understanding of the Paralympic Games,
explaining the numerous sports and enthusing you for the Paralympics as well as it is certainly
the case concerning the Olympic Games.
